The city of Port Huron is located on the knuckle of the thumb of the mitten-shaped land mass that is Michigan, roughly 60 miles northeast of Detroit. Its shape is somewhat like a curvaceous, small-waisted mermaid (or woman with ankles crossed), with a shoulder nestled against the base of Lake Huron and her lower half/legs stretching out along the St. Clair River. Her southerly neighbor, Marysville, rests at her fins/feet. The total area of the city is 12.2 square miles (31.7 square kilometres). 8.1 square miles of it is land, 4.2 (33.99%) is water. The Black River runs through Port Huron, and motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists cross it by way of three drawbridges, which, except when winter has frozen the river's flow, insert periodic pauses in the daily bustle as they're raised to allow boats to pass through.
Adorning the skyline above the juncture of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, a pair of crossings collectively called the Blue Water Bridge connect both Interstate 69 and Interstate 94 of Port Huron with Sarnia, Ontario, Canada's Highway 402. The second span, carrying three lanes of eastbound traffic, was completed in 1997, while the original, constructed in 1938 and now carrying three lanes of westbound traffic, was refurbished and reopened in 1999. Annually, the bridge handles around 6 million vehicle crossings and over $51 billion in goods. It's the second busiest commercial truck gateway between the U.S. and Canada, and the fastest-growing.
Port Huron was officially incorporated as a city in 1857. February 4, 2007 was its sesquicentennial (150th) birthday.
Two widely reknowned individuals have roots in Port Huron. The world's most prolific inventor (he obtained a record 1,093 U.S. patents), Thomas Alva Edison (1847 - 1931) lived here from age 7 until 16. Terry McMillan (born 1951), best-selling author of Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, was born and resided here until after she graduated high school at age 17.
Port Huron's north end features Birchwood Mall, which houses over 100 businesses, and Lakeside Park and Beach.
Downtown Port Huron is home to the local community college, auditorium/cultural center, library, museum, newspaper, and post office, along with an eclectic assortment of shops, eateries, offices, and night clubs. The locality is a major tourist attraction in July, drawing over 100,000 with the annual Port Huron to Mackinac Boat Race.
Mr. James Acheson, of Acheson Ventures, has contributed millions of his fortune to the betterment, expansion, and growth of Port Huron's south side, where he grew up. His grandfather, inventor Dr. Edward Acheson, was once a protégé of Thomas Edison.
